EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite terracotta antefix in the form of the head of Medusa, created by Etruscan artists during the 6th century BC. Currently housed at the Museo Nazionale Etrusco in Villa Giulia, Rome, this artwork originates from the sanctuary of Portonaccio a Veii. The sculpture depicts Medusa, a prominent figure in Greek mythology known for her serpent-like hair and petrifying gaze. With a lolling tongue and fierce expression on her face, she grins with menacing fangs that add to her grotesque allure. The intricate details of this ancient artifact highlight its classical beauty and mythological significance. Medusa's serpentine locks cascade around her head like a wild tangle of snakes, emphasizing her status as a gorgon - a terrifying monster from ancient lore. This ceramic masterpiece evokes both fascination and fear as it captures Medusa's mythical power within its delicate craftsmanship. Luisa Ricciarini skillfully captures every nuance of this remarkable piece through photography, allowing viewers to appreciate its historical importance and artistic brilliance. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image, we are transported back in time to an era where myths held great sway over human imagination. This photograph serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient civilizations and their ability to create enduring works that continue to captivate us today.
