Picus Shorii, Dinopium shorii shorii, Himalayan Flameback, also known as the Himalayan

Picus Shorii, Dinopium shorii shorii, Himalayan Flameback, also known as the Himalayan Goldenback, is a species of bird in the Picidae family.. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the Picus Shorii, also known as the Himalayan Flameback or Himalayan Goldenback. The bird, belonging to the Picidae family, is a stunning species found in the Himalaya Mountains. The engraving was created in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, who were renowned for their expertise in capturing the essence of birds through their illustrations. John Gould's fascination with avian creatures from the East began when a collection of birds from the Himalayas arrived at the Zoological Society's museum. Inspired by this encounter, John conceived an ambitious project - publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and one hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played an integral role in bringing these visions to life by meticulously transferring her drawings onto large lithographic stones. These remarkable prints, now referred to as "Gould plates" are treasured for their intricate details and vibrant colors that breathe life into each feathered subject. This particular image captures not only the exotic allure of this Asian bird but also provides insight into animal behavior and markings. As we admire this close-up illustration from early 19th-century natural history books and manuscripts, we can appreciate both its artistic value and scientific significance. Quint Lox has skillfully captured this piece from Liszt Collection's archives for us to marvel at nature's wonders once again.
