Conflagration at Sir C. Prices Wharf, Blackfriars, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Conflagration at Sir C. Prices Wharf, Blackfriars, 1845. The London fire brigade attempting to extinguish a fire...in the warehouses belonging to Sir Charles Price and Co. oil and colourmen...adjoining Blackfriars-bridge...Now the fears of the inhabitants were raised to a painful pitch, lest there should be an explosion of gas - in which case there must have been fearful devastation...The man who lost his life is known to have been working at the engine that was destroyed; in all probability, he missed his way when he retreated, and, instead of jumping into the river, became fixed against a wooden gate, and was compelled to remain in that situation until the flames came upon him, and burnt him to death. A very small portion of his body was found, which was instantly conveyed to the bone house. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

Conflagration at Sir C. Prices Wharf, Blackfriars, 1845 - A Glimpse into the Fiery Chaos
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a harrowing scene from the heart of London in 1845. The image showcases the intense efforts of the London fire brigade as they valiantly battle to extinguish a devastating fire that engulfs the warehouses belonging to Sir Charles Price and Co. , oil and colourmen. As flames lick at the sky, adjacent to Blackfriars Bridge, fear grips the hearts of onlookers who dread a potential explosion of gas that could unleash unimaginable devastation upon this bustling area. Amidst this chaos, tragedy strikes when it is discovered that one brave soul has lost his life while working with an engine destroyed by the inferno. The man's fate becomes apparent; he must have become disoriented amidst thick smoke and confusion, unable to find his way out. Tragically trapped against a wooden gate, he was left defenseless against encroaching flames until they consumed him entirely. Only fragments of his body were recovered before being reverently transported to rest in peace. This poignant photograph not only serves as a testament to the bravery exhibited by firefighters during times of crisis but also offers us a glimpse into Victorian-era emergency services and their valiant efforts in protecting lives and property from ravaging fires. It stands as a stark reminder of both human vulnerability in face of nature's fury and our indomitable spirit when faced with adversity.
