EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of the altarpiece of the Seven Joys of the Virgin, created around 1480 by the enigmatic Master of the Holy Family. The right panel features a trio of angel musicians, their ethereal presence emanating from the oil-painted wooden surface. Measuring 94x127 cm, this masterpiece is now housed in the prestigious Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The angels are depicted seated and singing with utmost devotion and harmony. Their celestial voices resonate through their delicate expressions and graceful postures. Each musician holds a different musical instrument - one plays a lute-like stringed instrument, another plucks at an elegant harp, while the third angel skillfully handles what appears to be a small pipe or flute. Their music fills not only our ears but also our hearts with joyous melodies that transcend earthly bounds. A glimpse into this exquisite detail reveals intricate musical scores adorning each page they sing from – evidence of meticulous craftsmanship during Germany's Northern Renaissance period. Originally commissioned for Cologne's Benedictine Convent of Maccabees, which safeguarded relics belonging to Maccabean martyrs, this altarpiece radiates spiritual significance alongside its artistic brilliance. Through this photograph captured by Fine Art Finder and made available by Bridgeman Images, we can appreciate both its historical context and religious symbolism. As we gaze upon these heavenly beings lost in song, we are reminded not only of their divine purpose but also how art has transcended
