The gray shadow of the moon cast on bright clouds of the northern Pacific Ocean
May 20, 2012 - The smoky gray shadow of the moon cast on bright clouds of the northern Pacific Ocean, as the May 20 solar eclipse point tracked towards the Aleutian Islands and then on to northern California. The eclipse is seen obliquely so it appears as a flattened circle. The edge of the shadow looks diffused because of the partial eclipse zone, the wide area where more or less of the sun can be seen around the edge of the moon. The zone of partial eclipse covers a far wider area than the area covered by the total eclipse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of a solar eclipse on May 20,2012. The gray shadow of the moon gracefully falls upon the bright clouds that blanket the vast expanse of the northern Pacific Ocean. As this celestial phenomenon unfolds, we witness how the eclipse point tracks towards the Aleutian Islands and then makes its way to northern California. The image showcases an oblique view of the eclipse, presenting it as a flattened circle against the backdrop of space. The diffused edge of the shadow is a result of being in the partial eclipse zone, where varying degrees of sunlight can be seen around the edges of the moon. It's fascinating to note that this zone covers a significantly wider area than what is encompassed by total eclipses. With no human presence in sight, this photograph allows us to solely focus on nature's grandeur. From outer space, we gain an overhead perspective that reveals Earth's surface and its physical geography with remarkable clarity. The curvature of our planet serves as a reminder not only about its shape but also about our place within it. Incorporating shades of gray and cloudy textures into its composition, this image beautifully portrays both tranquility and mystery simultaneously. It invites contemplation on our environment, weather patterns, and geographical features while reminding us how awe-inspiring celestial events can be when observed from afar.
