Parasol mushrooms, Lepiota procera
Parasol mushrooms. The fruiting bodies of Lepiota procera, the Parasol mushroom. This large mushroom produces a flattened pale brown cap of up to 25cm diameter, from egg-shaped expansions (foreground right). The large conical cap on the left will flatten out as it grows. The stalk grows up to 30cm long. This mushroom has white gills and soft white flesh which is edible and tastes excellent. It grows in open woods and pastures during summer and autumn. Mushrooms are reproductive bodies, which develop to form and distribute spores after two fungal mycelia of the same species have come together

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elegant Parasol mushrooms, scientifically known as Lepiota procera. These magnificent fruiting bodies are a sight to behold, with their flattened pale brown caps that can reach an impressive diameter of up to 25cm. In the foreground on the right, you can observe these mushrooms in their early stages, emerging from egg-shaped expansions before they fully mature. The larger conical cap on the left is a testament to the growth potential of this species; it will gradually flatten out as it continues its development. Standing tall and proud, the stalk of this mushroom can extend up to 30cm in length. With white gills and soft white flesh, these edible fungi offer not only visual delight but also an exquisite taste. Thriving in open woods and pastures during summer and autumn, these parasol mushrooms play a vital role in nature's cycle. As reproductive bodies for their species, they form and distribute spores once two fungal mycelia of the same kind have united. This remarkable photograph captures both the beauty and scientific significance of these parasol mushrooms. It serves as a reminder of nature's intricate wonders while showcasing one example of Earth's diverse fungal kingdom.
