Galaxy M106

Spiral galaxy M106. Optical image of the spiral galaxy M106 (NGC 4258), around 25 million light years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. North is at top. It is seen at an angle, revealing dark lanes of dust in its two main arms. The blue light of the arms comes from young hot stars, while the yellow light indicates older stars towards the centre. M106 is around 30, 000 light years across. This galaxy has an active centre, thought to contain a large black hole, that makes it visible to radio telescopes. The faint galaxy, seen edge-on at upper right, is NGC 4248

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Galaxy M106, a spiral galaxy located approximately 25 million light years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. The image reveals this celestial wonder at an angle, allowing us to witness the intricate details within its two main arms. Dark lanes of dust gracefully weave through the galaxy, while vibrant blue hues emanate from young and hot stars residing in its arms. Towards the center, a warm yellow glow signifies the presence of older stars. Spanning an impressive distance of around 30,000 light years across, M106 boasts an active core believed to harbor a massive black hole that renders it detectable by radio telescopes. In addition to M106's prominence, another faint galaxy can be observed on the upper right side when viewed edge-on – NGC 4248 adds further intrigue to this cosmic scene. As we delve into cosmology and astrophysics through this optical image captured by Science Photo Library, our understanding of galactic phenomena deepens. This awe-inspiring snapshot not only offers a glimpse into the vastness and complexity of our universe but also serves as a reminder that there is still much more waiting to be discovered beyond our own starry skies.
