This colored engraving showcases the renowned Italian-born French soprano, Erminia Borghi-Mamo (1855-1941), in her prime during the late 19th century. Born in Palermo, Sicily, Borghi-Mamo made her professional opera debut in 1875 at the age of 20 in Milan, Italy. By the late 1870s, she had gained international recognition and was performing regularly in Europe and the Americas. In this portrait, Borghi-Mamo is depicted wearing an elegant blouse with a high neckline and long sleeves, accessorized with a pair of spectacles and an upswept chignon. Her expressive face and dramatic posture convey the intensity and passion that she brought to her operatic performances.
