Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 87r, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the Book of Hours (Use of Rouen), specifically folio 87r, dating back to around 1470. Created by the talented Master of the Geneva Latini, a renowned French illuminator active in Rouen during the late 15th century, this exquisite manuscript is a testament to the city's prominence as a center for book production. During this era, Rouen boasted an influential cathedral with a prosperous chapter that spared no expense in commissioning books and nurturing its vast library. It is believed that stationers and booksellers were concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct, further enhancing Rouen's reputation as a hub for literary arts. The delicate craftsmanship on display here exemplifies the masterful technique employed by the artist. Using ink, tempera, gold leaf on vellum - an animal skin parchment - every stroke exudes precision and finesse. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring life to each illuminated letter and decorative border. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art today, this remarkable piece offers us a glimpse into medieval France's rich cultural heritage. Its historical significance lies not only in its artistic merit but also in its representation of Rouen's flourishing book industry during one of Europe's most transformative periods. Heritage Images has beautifully captured this rare gem through their lens; allowing us to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and historical value without commercial intent.
