EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail of "The Foligno Madonna" by Raphael, one of the most renowned Italian Renaissance painters. Created around 1511-12, this oil on wood transferred to canvas masterpiece is housed in the Vatican Museums and Galleries in Vatican City. Commissioned by Sigismondo de Conti for the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome, this altarpiece was later moved to the monastery of St. Anne in Foligno. Despite being looted by Napoleon's forces in 1799, it was thankfully returned to Italy after the Battle of Waterloo. In this particular section captured within the photo print, we witness an enchanting sacra conversazione scene. The heavenly intervention is evident as Saint Jerome presents his lion while surrounded by saints Francis of Assisi and John the Baptist. Kneeling before them with devout prayer is a donor figure. Raphael's meticulous attention to detail shines through as he skillfully portrays clouds and cherubic putti amidst a celestial backdrop. The Virgin Mary tenderly holds her child Jesus at the center, radiating maternal love and divine grace. This remarkable artwork not only exemplifies Raphael's mastery but also serves as a testament to Italy's rich artistic heritage during the Cinquecento period. It stands as a symbol of religious devotion and cultural significance that continues to captivate viewers from all corners of the world.
