Artists concept of Mars and its tiny moon Phobos
Artists concept of how Mars and its tiny satellite Phobos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from Phobos surface. In this image Phobos is passing over the low martian plains of Syrtis Major. Below the plains extending down to Mars terminator and beyond is the heavily cratered Terra Sabaea. Clouds of water-ice crystals are forming at the terminator between light and dark.
Phobos is the larger of Mars two satellites, with a length of about 16 miles and about 11 miles across its smallest dimension. Phobos does not have enough mass for gravity to pull it into a uniform sphere like the larger satellites and planets in the Solar System.
Phobos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars gravity, orbiting a mere 5, 800 miles above Mars surface, making it the closest satellite to its host planet in the Solar System. Phobos orbit is so low that it completes one revolution in less than eight hours, easily outpacing by threefold Mars rotation period of 24 hours, 40 minutes. The resulting tidal forces are causing Phobos altitude to decay at the relatively rapid rate of 6 feet per century; in about 50 million years Phobos will either be torn apart by Mars gravity or crash into the martian surface

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's concept of Mars and its diminutive moon, Phobos. Taken from a distance of approximately 100 miles above Phobos' surface, the image offers a breathtaking view of the Red Planet and its intriguing satellite. As Phobos gracefully glides over the low martian plains of Syrtis Major, one cannot help but marvel at the contrasting landscapes below. The heavily cratered Terra Sabaea stretches beneath the plains, extending all the way to Mars' terminator and beyond. At this boundary between light and dark, wisps of water-ice crystals form ethereal clouds that add an otherworldly beauty to the scene. Phobos itself is a fascinating celestial object. With dimensions measuring about 16 miles in length and 11 miles across its smallest dimension, it lacks sufficient mass for gravity to shape it into a uniform sphere like larger satellites or planets in our Solar System. Believed to be an asteroid captured by Mars' gravitational pull long ago, Phobos orbits at an astonishingly close distance—only 5,800 miles above Mars' surface—making it the closest satellite to its host planet within our entire Solar System. Its orbital speed surpasses that of Mars' rotation period by threefold; completing one revolution in less than eight hours. However, this proximity comes with consequences as tidal forces are causing Phobos' altitude to gradually decay at a rate of six feet per century. In around 50 million years, scientists predict that either Mars will tear apart this enigmatic moon or it will meet a dramatic end by crashing into the martian surface. Captured beautifully by Walter Myers from Stocktrek Images, this print invites us on a visual journey through space while igniting curiosity about these celestial wonders beyond our own world.
