Underwater volcanic vent C015 / 1838
Underwater volcanic vent. This is a black smoker, a seabed volcanic vent where minerals dissolve in water superheated by magma (molten rock). The minerals precipitate out on contact with the cold surrounding water, producing smoke (black, top). The minerals form multicoloured crusts around the vent, causing them to grow into tall chimneys over time. Photographed in the Caribbean in 2010, using the remotely controlled HyBIS (Hydraulic Benthic Interactive Sampler) submersible. This submersible was operated by researchers from the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of an underwater volcanic vent, known as a black smoker. Taken in 2010 in the Caribbean, this image captures the moment when superheated water, heated by magma deep beneath the ocean floor, rises to meet the cold surrounding water. As minerals dissolve in this scorching hot water and then precipitate upon contact with cooler temperatures, smoke billows out from these vents. The multicolored crusts formed by these mineral deposits create a stunning contrast against the dark backdrop of the seabed. Over time, these crusts grow into tall chimneys that tower over their surroundings. This remarkable photograph was captured using HyBIS (Hydraulic Benthic Interactive Sampler), a remotely controlled submersible operated by researchers from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK. With its rich geological significance and scientific importance for understanding Earth's processes, this image encapsulates both natural wonder and cutting-edge research. It serves as a testament to mankind's exploration of our planet's hidden depths and highlights how advancements in technology enable us to unravel nature's mysteries. Photographed with precision and expertise by B. MURTON/SOUTHAMPTON OCEANOGRAPHY CENTRE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this print is not only visually striking but also offers valuable insights into high-temperature hydrothermal vents found on our ocean floor.
