Underwater volcanic vent C015 / 1837
Underwater volcanic vent. This is a black smoker, a seabed volcanic vent where minerals dissolve in water superheated by magma (molten rock). The minerals precipitate out on contact with the cold surrounding water, producing smoke (black). The minerals form multicoloured crusts around the vent, causing them to grow into tall chimneys over time. Photographed in the Caribbean in 2010, using the remotely controlled HyBIS (Hydraulic Benthic Interactive Sampler) submersible. This submersible was operated by researchers from the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of an underwater volcanic vent, known as a black smoker. Located in the Caribbean and photographed in 2010, this extraordinary sight showcases nature's powerful forces at work beneath the ocean floor. The image reveals a seabed volcanic vent where minerals dissolve in water that has been superheated by magma, or molten rock. As these minerals come into contact with the cold surrounding water, they precipitate out and create smoke, hence earning its name as a black smoker. Over time, multicolored crusts form around the vent, causing them to grow into tall chimneys. To capture this incredible scene from the depths of the ocean, researchers from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton utilized a remotely controlled submersible called HyBIS (Hydraulic Benthic Interactive Sampler). This advanced technology allowed scientists to explore and study these hydrothermal vents without risking human lives. The photograph not only highlights Earth's geological wonders but also emphasizes how crucial it is for us to understand our planet's complex systems. By studying underwater volcanic vents like this one, scientists gain valuable insights into high-temperature environments and mineral-rich ecosystems that thrive under extreme conditions. This remarkable image serves as a testament to humanity's continuous exploration of our oceans and their hidden treasures while shedding light on Earth's fascinating geology.
