Tonsils, artwork
Tonsils. Artwork of a section through the mouth showing a palatine tonsil. The clear rod points to the tonsillar fossa, a depression that is occupied by a palatine tonsil (round, right). Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue and are part of the immune system. It is thought the palatine tonsils, found on either side of the throat, protect against respiratory tract infections. The large red mass that occupies most of the oral cavity is the tongue. At top are the soft (red) and hard (yellow) palates, which separate the oral cavity from the nasal cavity. The soft palate ends in the uvula, the little piece of flesh that hangs down at the back of the mouth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Tonsils, artwork" offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate anatomy of the human mouth. The image showcases a section through the mouth, highlighting the palatine tonsil - a crucial component of our immune system. Positioned on either side of the throat, these round masses of lymphoid tissue play a vital role in protecting against respiratory tract infections. The photograph also draws attention to other significant structures within the oral cavity. The large red mass dominating the frame is none other than our versatile tongue, while above it lie the soft and hard palates that separate the oral and nasal cavities. Atop this arrangement rests an intriguing piece called uvula - a small fleshy projection hanging down at the back of our mouths. With its white background and meticulous illustration style, this print beautifully captures both aesthetic appeal and scientific accuracy. It serves as an educational tool for biology enthusiasts or medical professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of muscle tissue, healthy organs, and anatomical features related to respiration. Courtesy of Science Photo Library's extensive collection, this artwork provides valuable insights into myology (the study of muscles) as well as various aspects surrounding tonsillar fossa, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx opening, and more. This visually striking composition truly brings to life complex biological concepts while showcasing nature's remarkable design within us all.
