Sphinx, Egyptian pyramids, 19th century C016 / 2387

Sphinx and pyramids, Giza Necropolis, Egypt. These 26th-century BC structures are made from limestone, with granite also used in the pyramids (tombs for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt: Khafre, left; Khufu, right). The lower portions of the Great Sphinx, covered by desert sands, were excavated several times in the 19th century. This view dates to the period after 1867. An earlier excavation was marked by the Dream Stele (1401 BC) of Thutmose IV, at lower centre. The granite altar between the Sphinxs paws (lower right) dates from the time of Rameses II (13th century BC). This albumen print is from the photographic studio Maison Bonfils

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print transports us to the ancient wonders of Egypt's Giza Necropolis. The image showcases the iconic Sphinx and pyramids, magnificent structures that have stood for over four millennia. Crafted from limestone with touches of granite, these colossal pyramids served as tombs for pharaohs Khafre and Khufu. The lower portions of the Great Sphinx, obscured by desert sands, were meticulously excavated multiple times during the 1800s. This particular view captures the site after 1867 when it was rediscovered. Notably, a previous excavation is marked by Thutmose IV's Dream Stele at its lower center. Adding to the scene's historical richness is a granite altar between the paws of the Sphinx dating back to Rameses II in the 13th century BC. It stands as a testament to ancient rituals and beliefs. The sepia-toned albumen print originates from Maison Bonfils, an esteemed photographic studio renowned for their artistry capturing cultural landmarks worldwide. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece today, we are transported back in time to witness an expedition exploring Egypt's rich anthropological heritage. In this image, tourists and locals alike can be seen marveling at these architectural marvels while camels traverse through sandy dunes nearby. It serves as a reminder of our enduring fascination with history and culture—a timeless connection between past and present that continues to captivate explorers from all corners of the globe.
