Jupiter, infrared Gemini North image
Jupiter. Near-infrared image of Jupiter, showing the Great Red Spot (white) and a smaller red spot (Red Spot Junior) that formed between 1998 and 2000. The spots are a reddish colour in visible light. The colours here indicate cloud height, from high altitude (white), through blue to lower altitudes (red). The bright areas around the poles are polar stratospheric hazes. Jupiters red spots are massive storm systems, tens of thousands of kilometres across and large enough to swallow Earth whole. The Great Red Spot has lasted for hundreds of years. Image obtained on 14 July 2006 by the Near-Infrared Imager (NIRI) at Gemini North, Hawaii, using the ALTAIR adaptive optics system.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of Jupiter, our magnificent gas giant neighbor in the solar system. Taken on July 14,2006, by the Near-Infrared Imager (NIRI) at Gemini North in Hawaii, this near-infrared image reveals fascinating details about the planet's atmospheric composition and storm systems. The Great Red Spot takes center stage in this image as a prominent white feature against Jupiter's banded backdrop. This colossal storm system has endured for centuries and is large enough to engulf our entire Earth. Alongside it lies another red spot known as Red Spot Junior, which formed between 1998 and 2000. The colors depicted here represent cloud height: from high-altitude regions shown in white to lower altitudes displayed in shades of blue and red. Additionally, the bright areas surrounding Jupiter's poles are polar stratospheric hazes that add an ethereal touch to its spherical form. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing snapshot taken using advanced ground-based observation techniques like ALTAIR adaptive optics system, we can't help but marvel at the sheer magnitude and complexity of our celestial neighbor. This image serves as a testament to humanity's ongoing exploration of planetary science and reminds us of the vast wonders that lie beyond our own world.
