Silverback mountain gorilla and female

Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) male and female. The mature male leading the troop is known as a silverback due to the colour of the fur on its back. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. High elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of roots, leaves and stems daily, and can exceed 2 metres in height. Mountain gorillas reproduce slowly and are vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Photographed in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic presence of a Silverback mountain gorilla leading his troop through the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The mature male, distinguished by the silver fur on his back, stands tall and powerful, embodying strength and leadership. Beside him is a female gorilla, displaying their close bond as they navigate their way through the dense vegetation. Mountain gorillas are an endangered species found in the high-altitude cloud forests of Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. Their survival is threatened by habitat destruction, poaching, and conflicts caused by war. This image serves as a reminder of their vulnerability and highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures. With their large stature exceeding 2 meters in height, mountain gorillas consume several kilograms of roots, leaves, and stems daily to sustain themselves. Their slow reproductive rate further adds to their vulnerability. The photograph showcases not only the biological aspects but also provides insight into social dynamics within this great ape species. It portrays a family unit moving together under the guidance of a dominant male - an example of animal behavior that reflects similarities with human society. Science Photo Library has beautifully captured this moment from nature's realm – an awe-inspiring glimpse into one corner of our planet where wildlife thrives amidst challenging conditions.
