EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable transformation of Shenzhen, China, from a humble fishing village to a bustling metropolis between 1999 and 2008. Located in Guangdong province just north of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was designated as a Special Economic Zone in 1979. The image on the left captures its state in 1999 when it had already evolved into a thriving city. However, by 2008 (depicted on the right), Shenzhen had undergone unprecedented industrial and urban development. The photograph also highlights the significant growth of Shenzhen's port during this period. In just nine years, it transformed into China's second busiest mainland port after Shanghai, as depicted at the bottom middle section of the image. Additionally, there is evidence of extensive urbanization spreading across the surrounding land. These stunning satellite images were acquired using advanced technology such as Landsat and ASTER satellites. The Landsat satellite captured the snapshot from 1999 while ASTER provided an updated view for 2008. This visual documentation serves as a testament to human progress and economic development throughout Asia in the late 20th century. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring print that encapsulates not only China's rapid urban growth but also demonstrates how Earth observation satellites have revolutionized our ability to capture these transformative moments in history with astonishing detail and precision.
