Proton collision C014 / 1806

Particle tracks from a proton-proton collision seen by the CMS (compact muon solenoid) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Before the collision the ions had been accelerated by the large hadron collider (LHC). A large number of particles (orange lines) were created by the collision. The energies of these particles are measured by the electromagnetic calorimeter (short red lines) and the hadron calorimeter (blue rectangles). Among the particles produced was a strange bottom meson, which consists of a bottom antiquark bound with a strange quark. The particle was not seen, but is revealed through its decay products; a pair of muons (long red lines). The green lines show the energy deposited by the muons in the detectors muon chambers (red rectangles)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a proton-proton collision at CERN, the renowned European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. The collision occurred within the CMS (compact muon solenoid) detector, which is part of the large hadron collider (LHC), where ions are accelerated to high energies before colliding. The image reveals a multitude of orange lines representing numerous particles that were generated by this powerful collision. To measure their energies, two types of calorimeters are employed: the electromagnetic calorimeter (depicted as short red lines) and the hadron calorimeter (represented by blue rectangles). Among these newly created particles is an elusive strange bottom meson – consisting of a bound bottom antiquark and a strange quark – which remains unseen in this photo. However, its presence is unveiled through its decay products: a pair of muons represented by long red lines. To further understand these subatomic phenomena, green lines illustrate the energy deposited by these muons in the detectors' specialized chambers depicted as red rectangles. This mesmerizing snapshot offers us a glimpse into cutting-edge research on particle physics and cosmology conducted at CERN. It showcases not only intricate apparatuses but also provides valuable insights into fundamental particles' behavior and trajectories within our universe's complex structure.
