Mercury, MESSENGER January 2008 flyby

Mercury. MESSENGER image of Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. At upper right is the giant Caloris basin. The MESSENGER (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft was launched from Earth in August 2004. After a series of flybys of Earth, Venus and Mercury, to slow it down, the spacecraft will enter orbit around Mercury in March 2011. It will then start a year-long mission to map and study the surface. This image was obtained during MESSENGERs first flyby of Mercury in January 2008

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury, as captured by NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft during its first flyby in January 2008. The image highlights the majestic Caloris basin, a giant feature located at the upper right of the frame. MESSENGER, short for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging, was launched from Earth in August 2004 and embarked on an incredible journey through flybys of Earth, Venus, and finally Mercury to decelerate its speed. In March 2011, it successfully entered orbit around Mercury and commenced a year-long mission dedicated to mapping and studying the planet's surface. The monochromatic aesthetic adds an air of mystery to this mesmerizing snapshot taken from space. As we gaze upon this satellite image captured by MESSENGER's cutting-edge technology, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our solar system. This photograph represents a remarkable achievement in planetary science and space exploration in the 21st century. Science Photo Library brings us yet another extraordinary glimpse into our universe with this stunning artwork that beautifully encapsulates both scientific curiosity and artistic expression. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity while igniting our imagination about what lies beyond our home planet.
