Glacier terminus, South Georgia
Glacier terminus at its outflow into the sea, with a research boat (centre) dwarfed by the size of the ice cliffs. This is the Nordenskjold glacier, a large glacier that flows into Cumberland East Bay on the northern coast of South Georgia. It is named after the Swedish geologist and geographer Otto Nordenskjold, and was discovered by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition 1901-04, which Nordenskjold led with Carl Anton Larsen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur of the Glacier terminus in South Georgia. The image captures the moment when this colossal glacier meets the vastness of the sea, with towering ice cliffs dominating the landscape. In the center of this frozen wonderland, a research boat appears minuscule in comparison to its surroundings. Named after renowned Swedish geologist Otto Nordenskjold, who led an expedition to Antarctica from 1901-04, this is Nordenskjold glacier. Flowing into Cumberland East Bay on South Georgia's northern coast, it stands as a testament to nature's raw power and unyielding force. The photograph not only highlights the immense scale of these ice formations but also emphasizes humanity's quest for knowledge and understanding. A lone scientist aboard an inflatable dinghy navigates through icy waters, symbolizing our relentless pursuit of scientific exploration even in such extreme environments. With elements of both earth science and glaciology at play here, researchers from various fields converge upon this remote location to unravel its mysteries. From biologists studying marine life to zoologists examining unique ecosystems, these dedicated scientists brave freezing temperatures and treacherous conditions in their pursuit of knowledge. As we gaze upon this remarkable snapshot captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again that our planet holds countless wonders yet to be discovered – each one waiting patiently for intrepid explorers like those depicted here.
