Geometer moth. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a moth belonging to the family Geometridae. The head is dominated by two large compound eyes (red) and two antennae (mounted on top of the head). The antennae and the maxillary palps (mouthparts between the eyes) sense movement and smell. The moth is covered in scales that are modified hairs (setae). They are made of chitin, a common substance in insect exoskeletons
