Fly proboscis, SEM
Housefly proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the proboscis (mouthparts) of a housefly (Musca domestica). The proboscis is used for piercing and sucking up food. A housefly will feed on decaying matter, as well as human food, often transferring disease- causing organisms from one to the other. The tip of the proboscis in a housefly has these spongy flaps (labella), used to soak up liquids. Magnification: x170 when printed 10cm high
