Fallopian tube, SEM
Fallopian tube. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the epithelial lining of a Fallopian tube (oviduct). The tube is lined with a moist mucous membrane. This contains cells (brown) that secrete mucus to protect the surface of the tube. The two Fallopian tubes are muscular ducts through which ova (eggs, the female reproductive sex cells) pass from the ovaries to the uterus following ovulation. The wave-like motion of the numerous hair-like cilia (green) moves the eggs along the tubes. Magnification: x2000 at 6x7cm size
