Eroded glacial landscape, British Columbi

Eroded glacial landscape. These multi-coloured pyroclastic (formed from volcanic eruptions) beds and sandstone and mudstone layers were eroded by glacial movements 12, 000 years ago. At this time, large ice-dammed lakes above the valley periodically released giant floods (called jokulhaups, Icelandic for glacial burst) and scoured the valley walls, exposing the colourful rock layers. The colours are due to mineral deposits in the layers, such as olivine (green) and pyroxene (red). Photographed at the Deadman River Valley, British Columbia, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of an eroded glacial landscape in British Columbia. The multi-colored layers of pyroclastic beds, sandstone, and mudstone were shaped by the powerful movements of glaciers approximately 12,000 years ago. During this time, immense ice-dammed lakes above the valley would periodically unleash colossal floods known as jokulhaups, resulting in the scouring of the valley walls and revealing these vibrant rock formations. The striking colors seen in this photograph are a result of mineral deposits within the layers. Minerals like olivine give a vivid green hue while pyroxene contributes to shades of red. Located at Deadman River Valley in British Columbia, Canada, this image captures nature's artistry with its intricate geological patterns. The photograph not only highlights the fascinating geological processes that have shaped our planet but also emphasizes the dynamic forces at play during glaciation periods. It offers a glimpse into Earth's history and reminds us of its ever-changing landscapes. Taken from an aerial perspective by Science Photo Library, this image serves as a testament to both natural beauty and scientific exploration. It invites viewers to appreciate the wonders hidden beneath our feet and encourages further curiosity about geology and physical geography.
