Dantes Inferno, the gloomy wood

Dantes Inferno. Canto I, lines 1-2: In the midway of this our mortal life, I [Dante] found me in a gloomy wood, astray. Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) wrote his epic poem Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) between 1308 and his death in 1321. Totalling 14, 233 lines, and divided into three parts (Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso), it is considered the greatest literary work in the Italian language and a world masterpiece. It is a comprehensive survey of medieval theology, literature and thought. Artwork by French artist Gustave Dore (1832-1883); engraving from The Vision of Hell (1868), Henry Francis Carys English translation of the Inferno

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Dante Alighieri's renowned epic poem, "Dante's Inferno". The image showcases the opening scene described in Canto I, where Dante finds himself lost and astray in a gloomy wood. As one of Italy's greatest poets from the 14th century, Dante crafted his masterpiece, "The Divine Comedy" which consists of three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. French artist Gustave Dore brings this literary work to life through his intricate engraving from "The Vision of Hell" (1868), an English translation by Henry Francis Cary. The monochrome artwork transports us back to medieval times, immersing us in a world filled with allegory and poetic brilliance. In this thought-provoking illustration, we witness a solitary figure - representing Dante himself - standing amidst towering trees that seem to close in on him. The dark forest symbolizes both physical and spiritual confusion as he embarks on a journey through hell. This powerful visual highlights the human struggle against sin and serves as an entry point into exploring medieval theology, literature, and thought. With its historical significance and cultural impact spanning centuries since its creation until today, Dante's Divina Commedia remains an unparalleled masterpiece within world literature. This print not only pays homage to the genius behind it but also invites viewers to delve into the depths of their own souls while contemplating humanity's eternal quest for redemption.
