Comet over trees, artwork C015 / 0777

Comet over trees, artwork. Comets are bodies of ice and dust that enter the inner solar system from the outer solar system. As they approach the Sun (lower right), the heat boils the ice, producing a coma around the nucleus, along with a tail stretching out behind it. This tail has two components, both shown here: a gas tail (blue) and a dust tail (white). The blue colour of the gas tail (actually an ionised plasma) is usually due to the presence of carbon monoxide ions. The gas tail points directly away from the Sun, while the dust tail is less affected by the solar wind and usually curves to one side

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Comet over trees" beautifully captures the mesmerizing phenomenon of comets in our solar system. Comets, which are icy bodies of dust and ice originating from the outer solar system, enter the inner solar system and approach the Sun with stunning effects. In this print, we witness a comet's journey as it nears the Sun, causing its icy composition to heat up and boil. This process creates a magnificent coma around its nucleus, accompanied by an awe-inspiring tail stretching out behind it. The tail consists of two distinct components showcased here: a striking blue gas tail and a graceful white dust tail. The vibrant blue hue of the gas tail is attributed to carbon monoxide ions present within an ionized plasma. Remarkably, this gas tail always points directly away from the Sun due to its interaction with solar wind. On the other hand, the dust tail exhibits more resilience against these forces and often curves to one side. Set against a backdrop of serene trees on Earth's horizon during sunset or sunrise, this illustration evokes both wonder and tranquility. Artist Lynette Cook has masterfully depicted nature's harmonious dance between celestial bodies and earthly landscapes. Through this artwork, we are reminded of our place in the vastness of space while appreciating cometary phenomena that continue to fascinate astronomers worldwide.
