Cliff face, Dorset
Cliff face. Erosion showing bands of the Bridport Sands, which were laid down in a shallow, tropical sea about 180 million years ago (Middle Jurassic). Alternating with the soft sand are protuding harder bands of rock where the sand has been cemented together with calcite and is much more resistant to weathering. In these hard layers, patterns can be seen that are the result of the movement of material by burrowing animals that lived in the sands at the time (bioturbation). Photographed on the coast to the south of Burton Bradstock, Dorset, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning cliff face in Dorset, United Kingdom. The image captures the intricate bands of Bridport Sands, which were formed approximately 180 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic period in a shallow tropical sea. As erosion has taken its toll over time, alternating layers of soft sand and harder rock have been exposed, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's artistry. The softer sand layers are easily weathered away by natural elements, while the protruding hard bands of rock composed of calcite remain resilient against erosion. These calcite-cemented layers offer a stark contrast to their surroundings and exhibit fascinating patterns resulting from the movement of burrowing animals that once inhabited these sands millions of years ago. Located on the picturesque coast south of Burton Bradstock in Dorset, this coastal marvel is a testament to Earth's geological history. The photograph not only highlights the beauty and complexity found within sedimentary cliffs but also serves as a reminder of our planet's rich past. Captured by Science Photo Library, this image provides an awe-inspiring glimpse into one small fragment of England's diverse landscape. It invites viewers to appreciate both the power and fragility inherent in our environment while showcasing nature's ability to create breathtaking formations over vast periods of time.
