Chikungunya virus research
Chikungunya virus research. Researcher working with cells cultured from Drosophila sp. fruit flies that have been genetically engineered to produce proteins of the Chikungunya virus. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an insect-borne Alphavirus that is transmitted to humans by virus-carrying Aedes sp. mosquitoes. CHIKV infection causes an illness with symptoms similar to dengue fever, with an acute febrile phase of the illness lasting only two to five days, followed by a prolonged arthralgic disease that affects the joints of the extremities. The pain associated with CHIKV infection of the joints persists for weeks or months, or in some cases years. Photographed at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dedicated efforts of a researcher at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, as they delve into the intricate world of Chikungunya virus research. In this image, we witness a female scientist meticulously working with cells cultured from genetically engineered Drosophila sp. fruit flies that produce proteins associated with the Chikungunya virus. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an Alphavirus transmitted to humans by Aedes sp. mosquitoes, leading to an illness resembling dengue fever. The acute febrile phase lasts only a few days but is followed by a prolonged arthralgic disease affecting the joints for weeks or even months. Equipped with advanced technology and expertise in genetic engineering and virology, this French researcher plays a crucial role in unraveling the mysteries surrounding CHIKV. With her focused gaze and precise pipetting technique, she contributes to our understanding of this debilitating disease. Within this laboratory setting, where biology meets cutting-edge innovation, scientists like her strive tirelessly to combat infectious diseases that pose significant threats to human health worldwide. By studying microorganisms and their interactions within cells on a molecular level, these researchers pave the way for potential treatments or preventive measures against such viruses. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to both scientific progress and international collaboration in tackling global health challenges head-on.
