Astronaut and Lunar Rover, Apollo 17
Astronaut and Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), composite image. US astronaut and geologist Dr Harrison Schmitt exploring the Taurus-Littrow region of the Moon, as part of NASAs Apollo 17 mission. The LRV (centre left) was an electric vehicle designed to operate in the low-gravity vacuum of the Moon. Behind, the Sculptured Hills (far left), the East Massif (centre) and Bear Mountain (far right), can be seen. Schmitt landed on the Moon on 11 December 1972, with mission commander Eugene Cernan. They spent 75 hours on the surface. Ron Evans remained in orbit in the command module. Dr Schmitt is the only scientist to have landed on the Moon. Apollo 17 was the last Apollo mission, and Schmitt and Cernan are the last people to have walked on the Moon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment when US astronaut and geologist Dr Harrison Schmitt embarked on a historic exploration of the Moon's Taurus-Littrow region during NASA's Apollo 17 mission. The composite image showcases Dr Schmitt alongside the remarkable Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), an electric vehicle specifically designed to navigate the low-gravity vacuum of our celestial neighbor. In this extraordinary lunar landscape, we witness the majestic Sculptured Hills, East Massif, and Bear Mountain in all their rocky grandeur. It was here that Dr Schmitt made his groundbreaking landing on December 11th, 1972, accompanied by mission commander Eugene Cernan. Together, they spent an impressive 75 hours conducting vital research and unraveling geological mysteries. Dr Schmitt holds a unique distinction as not only an astronaut but also as the sole scientist to have set foot on the Moon. This final Apollo mission marked a pivotal moment in space history, with both astronauts being the last individuals fortunate enough to experience walking on our lunar companion. The monochrome composition adds a touch of nostalgia to this iconic snapshot from humanity's early ventures into space exploration. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of mankind's insatiable curiosity for discovery and our relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries.
