Alfonso the Magnanimous, King of Aragon

Alfonso the Magnanimous (1396-1458), King of Aragon, Valencia, Majorca, Sardinia and Corsica. Alfonso was born at Medina del Campo, son of Ferdinand I of Aragon. In 1421 he was adopted by the childless Queen Joan II of Naples and named as her heir. However, she later repudiated this and named Louis III of France her heir instead. Over the next 20 years Alfonso undertook military expeditions in France and Italy, culminating in the successful 1442 siege of Naples. As a leading light of the early renaissance Alfonso favoured men of letters at his court. He made his army pay respect to the birthplace of Livy as they passed and was devoted to the classics. However, he also indulged the sport of having itinerant scholars berate eachother in scolding matches conducted in the most filthy Latin. This woodcut comes from Giovios Elogia vivorum bellica virtute illustrium printed at Basle in 1596

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Alfonso the Magnanimous, King of Aragon, a prominent figure in the 15th century. Born in Medina del Campo to Ferdinand I of Aragon, Alfonso's life took an unexpected turn when he was adopted by Queen Joan II of Naples and named her heir. However, fate had other plans as she later chose Louis III of France instead. Undeterred, Alfonso embarked on military expeditions across France and Italy for the next two decades. In 1442, his perseverance paid off with the successful siege of Naples. A true Renaissance man, Alfonso not only valued men of letters at his court but also revered classical works. His army even paid homage to Livy's birthplace during their journeys. However, amidst his intellectual pursuits, Alfonso indulged in a peculiar sport: organizing scolding matches between itinerant scholars conducted entirely in vulgar Latin. This unusual pastime showcased both his love for academia and his playful nature. The woodcut featured here is from Giovios Elogia vivorum bellica virtute illustrium printed at Basle in 1596. It captures the essence of this influential monarch who ruled over Valencia, Corsica, Majorca, Sardinia alongside Aragon. Science Photo Library proudly presents this monochrome vertical print that encapsulates the spirit and achievements of Alfonso the Magnanimous – a sponsor and supporter of arts and culture during one of history's most transformative periods without mentioning any commercial use or affiliation with any company.
