30-inch telescope, Helwan, Egypt
30-inch telescope, Helwan Observatory. This observatory was built in Helwan, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt, from 1903. This 30-inch reflector telescope was provided in 1905 by British astronomer John Henry Reynolds (1874-1949). The first large telescope erected in Africa and the Middle East, it was among the first to observe the southern skies. It began operations in January 1909, observing Halleys Comet that year and in 1911. It was mainly used to observe galaxies, providing data for the development of modern galaxy classification. It was also used to observe comets, Jupiters eighth satellite, Pluto, and solar eclipses

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive 30-inch telescope at Helwan Observatory in Egypt. Constructed in 1903, this observatory was a significant milestone for astronomical research in Africa and the Middle East. The telescope itself, generously provided by British astronomer John Henry Reynolds, played a crucial role in expanding our understanding of the universe. As one of the first telescopes to observe the southern skies, it commenced operations in January 1909 with its inaugural observation being Halley's Comet that same year. Over time, it became instrumental in studying galaxies and contributed valuable data for modern galaxy classification. Its versatile capabilities also allowed astronomers to investigate comets, Jupiter's eighth satellite, Pluto (before its reclassification), and even capture solar eclipses. The historical significance of this technological marvel cannot be overstated. It symbolizes not only advancements made during the early 20th century but also represents an era when scientific exploration transcended borders and united nations through shared knowledge. Today, this monochrome image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and curiosity about our place within the cosmos. Preserved by Science Photo Library, it allows us to appreciate both Egypt's rich history and its contributions to astronomical discoveries beyond commercial interests.
