Dust plumes off the Moroccan coast

February 10, 2008 - Dust plumes hundreds of kilometers long blow off the Moroccan coast. This satellite view captured the dust plumes mixing with clouds over the Atlantic Ocean the same day.
In this image, two largely parallel dust plumes blow off the coast. The northeast plume is more intense, thick enough in places to completely hide the water below. The other plume is thinner and shows faint wave patterns near the coast. In the northwest, the plumes thin and mingle, becoming one diffuse plume that blends with the clouds. Cloud cover nearly surrounds the dust plumes, and the clouds are especially heavy in the east.
Because clouds obscure much of Moroccoas land surface in this image, it does not show all the source points for the dust plumes. Some source points, however, appear just west of the clouds, especially for the thicker dust plume. Compared to neighboring countries to the south and east, Morocco is more mountainous and lacks the vast sand seas common in Mauritania and Algeria. According to the CIA world fact book, however, Morocco faces desertification from overgrazing, damage to vegetation, and farming in marginally productive areas. Stress on the land surface could contribute to dust storm formation

31"x27" (79x69cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 24x20 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 31x27 inches (787x685mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of dust plumes off the Moroccan coast on February 10,2008. The satellite view reveals two distinct dust plumes blowing parallel to each other, with the northeast plume appearing more intense and thick enough to obscure the water below. In contrast, the other plume is thinner and displays faint wave patterns near the coast. As these plumes move northwestward, they gradually blend and mingle into one diffuse plume that seamlessly merges with the surrounding clouds. The image also showcases Morocco's unique topography compared to its neighboring countries in North Africa. While lacking vast sand seas like Mauritania and Algeria, Morocco is a mountainous region facing challenges such as desertification caused by overgrazing, damage to vegetation, and farming in marginally productive areas. These stresses on the land surface contribute to dust storm formation. Although this photograph does not reveal all source points for these particular dust plumes due to cloud cover obscuring much of Morocco's land surface, some sources can be seen just west of the clouds—especially for the thicker dust plume. Through this stunning visual representation captured by Stocktrek Images, we are reminded of both nature's awe-inspiring beauty and our responsibility towards sustainable land management practices in order to mitigate environmental degradation.
