Silverfish scales, SEM

Silverfish scales, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) is a primitive insect that has remained unchanged for millions of years, and is considered a living fossil. The silverfish is so named because it is covered in tiny shiny scales. It is a common household pest, feeding on starches in food, books and clothes. 17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of silverfish scales, captured using a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). The silverfish, scientifically known as Lepisma saccharina, is an ancient insect that has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years, earning its title as a living fossil. Its name aptly describes its appearance, as it is adorned with countless tiny and shiny scales. Despite their fascinating characteristics, silverfish can be considered common household pests due to their diet preferences. These creatures feed on starches found in various sources such as food items, books, and clothing. Their ability to adapt and survive in human habitats makes them an intriguing subject for zoological studies. The photograph's magnification at x115 allows us to appreciate the minute details of these scales when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Through this image produced by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we gain insight into the surface structure of these primitive insects. The false-coloured presentation adds vibrancy to the composition while highlighting different aspects of their biology. Science Photo Library brings forth this remarkable visual representation from nature's realm - a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation. This print serves as a reminder of the diverse wonders found within our world's fauna and encourages further exploration into the captivating field of zoology.
