Self-propelling car

Self-propelling car. Historical artwork of a design for a self-moving or automotive car by the Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). This design is believed to date from 1478, and shows a sketch of the vehicle (top) and a more detailed plan of its inner workings (bottom). It used a series of geared wheels and leaf springs to propel itself along. A team of Italian scientists constructed a working wooden model based on this plan in Florence in 2004. This drawing was included in the Codex Atlanticus, a collection of Leonardos drawings compiled at the end of the sixteenth century by the sculptor Pompeo Leoni from original notebooks

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artwork by the legendary Italian artist, engineer, and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. Dating back to 1478, this design depicts an ingenious concept for a self-propelling car. The top sketch provides a glimpse of the vehicle's overall structure, while the bottom section reveals intricate details of its inner workings. Leonardo's visionary creation employed a remarkable combination of geared wheels and leaf springs to propel itself along. This groundbreaking idea was far ahead of its time and demonstrated his unparalleled understanding of technology even in the 15th century. Intriguingly, in 2004, a team of Italian scientists brought this extraordinary invention to life by constructing a working wooden model based on Leonardo's plan. Their successful endeavor not only paid homage to one of history's greatest minds but also showcased the timeless relevance and brilliance behind his designs. The drawing itself is part of the renowned Codex Atlanticus, which is an invaluable collection compiled at the end of the sixteenth century by sculptor Pompeo Leoni from Leonardo's original notebooks. It serves as testament to da Vinci's enduring legacy as both an artist and innovator. This print captures not just an illustration or technical drawing; it encapsulates centuries' worth of human curiosity, ingenuity, and progress in transportation technology. A true masterpiece that continues to inspire awe and admiration for Leonardo da Vinci’s genius across generations.
