1879 Charles Darwin steel engraving crop

Steel engraving by C.Cook, printed by William Mackenzie, the Scottish printer and publisher in 1899. It appears in James Taylors " The Victorian Empire" and is based on the 1879 Photograph by Elliot and Fry. According to Gene Kritsky, who maintains an archive of Darwin photographs, the 1879 photograph was from a session at his home, Down House. After Darwins death in 1882 this version was sold mounted by Elliot and Fry in memoriam, the photo noted as circa 1880. Darwin was famously not keen on having his photograph taken by strangers

Black And White Charles Charles Darwin Commemorative Darwin Engraving Evolution Natural Selection Naturalist Old Age Scientist Steel Victorian Mono Chrome

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Charles Darwin, the renowned Victorian naturalist and scientist. Created in 1879 by C. Cook, a skilled steel engraver, this image is based on an original photograph taken by Elliot and Fry. The print was later published by William Mackenzie, a prominent Scottish printer and publisher in 1899. The portrait showcases Darwin during his later years, reflecting his wisdom and experience. Known for his groundbreaking theory of evolution through natural selection, Darwin's contributions to science are immeasurable. Despite his reluctance to be photographed by strangers, this particular session took place at Down House - his beloved home. This commemorative engraving holds historical significance as it was released after Darwin's passing in 1882. It serves as a poignant tribute to the great mind that forever changed our understanding of life on Earth. The mono chrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to the image, emphasizing its vintage charm. Paul D. Stewart expertly captured the essence of Darwin's persona in this stunning print from Science Photo Library. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history, we are reminded not only of Darwin's immense impact but also of the power of human curiosity and scientific exploration that continues to shape our world today.
