Maffei I and II galaxies

Maffei I and II galaxies. North is at top. Maffei I (red, centre right) is an elliptical galaxy, Maffei II (centre left) is classified as a barred spiral. Both are thought to be around 8 to 10 million light years from Earth. They are part of a group (the Maffei I Group) that comprises some 20 galaxies. This group is thought to be a subgroup of the Local Group of galaxies, the group that contains our Milky Way. The group is thought to have been flung away from the Local Group after an interaction with the Andromeda galaxy (not seen). These two galaxies lie in the plane of the Milky Way, and are thus obscured by dust. They were only discovered in 1968. Photographed by the 1.22-metre Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar, California, USA

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Maffei I and II galaxies, revealing their hidden beauty that lies within the plane of our Milky Way. With North positioned at the top, Maffei I takes its place in the center right, emanating a striking red hue as an elliptical galaxy. On the other hand, Maffei II graces the center left with its enchanting presence, classified as a barred spiral. These celestial wonders reside approximately 8 to 10 million light years away from Earth and are part of a larger group known as the Maffei I Group. Comprising around 20 galaxies in total, this group is believed to be a subgroup of our very own Local Group which encompasses our beloved Milky Way. The intriguing history behind these two galaxies adds another layer of fascination. It is thought that they were flung away from the Local Group following an interaction with Andromeda galaxy (not visible in this image). However, due to their positioning within the Milky Way's plane and being shrouded by dust particles, their existence remained concealed until their discovery in 1968. Captured by the remarkable 1.22-meter Oschin Telescope located at Mount Palomar in California, USA; this awe-inspiring photograph provides us with a glimpse into distant realms of astrophysics and galactic marvels. Let your imagination soar among these stars as you explore this extraordinary snapshot captured by Science Photo Library.
