LM of uninfected root of a broad bean

Light micrograph of a transverse section through the root of the broad bean, Vicia faba, showing the central vascular tissues. Usually the roots of leguminous plants, such as V. faba, bear root nodules containing millions of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, this specimen however shows no such signs of infection. The large white areas are the vessels of the vascular system, the xylem and phloem. Xylem vessels carry water and minerals absorbed by the root to the rest of the plant whilst phloem vessels carry sugar in the reverse direction, from leaves to root. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a light micrograph of an uninfected root of a broad bean, Vicia faba. The image provides a detailed transverse section view, revealing the central vascular tissues within the root. Unlike most leguminous plants, which typically bear root nodules housing nitrogen-fixing bacteria in abundance, this particular specimen shows no signs of infection. The striking white areas visible in the photograph represent the vessels comprising the plant's vascular system: xylem and phloem. Xylem vessels play a crucial role by transporting water and minerals absorbed by the roots to other parts of the plant. On the other hand, phloem vessels carry sugar in reverse direction – from leaves to roots – facilitating nutrient distribution throughout. At a magnification of x40 at 35mm size, this nature-inspired image allows us to appreciate both its scientific significance and aesthetic appeal. It serves as a testament to botany enthusiasts who seek knowledge about various plant structures and their functions. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment in nature through this visually stunning print. Whether you are intrigued by botany or simply admire natural beauty, this photo is sure to captivate your imagination with its intricate details and vibrant portrayal of life beneath our feet.
