LM of head of Lyme disease tick, Ixodes ricinus

Lyme disease tick. Light micrograph of the tick Ixodes ricinus, principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe. At centre is the head of the tick with its barbed blood-sucking mouthparts (hypostome, white). The tick is common in Europe and attacks humans, domestic and wild animals. Ixodes ricinus carries the spirochaete bacterium Borrelia burg- dorferi, cause of both Lyme disease and a closely- related disease known as erythema migrans. Both diseases cause skin lesions, neurological and cardiac abnormalities and recurrent arthritis. In North America Lyme disease is transmitted by related ticks I.dammini and I.pacificus. Darkfield illumination. Magnification: x40 at 6x7cm size

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Lyme disease tick, Ixodes ricinus. The light micrograph reveals the head of this arachnid, featuring its fascinating barbed blood-sucking mouthparts known as the hypostome. As the principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe, this tick species poses a significant threat to humans and both domesticated and wild animals. Ixodes ricinus carries the spirochaete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is responsible for causing not only Lyme disease but also a closely-related condition called erythema migrans. Both diseases manifest through skin lesions, neurological and cardiac abnormalities, as well as recurrent arthritis. While North America experiences transmission of Lyme disease through related ticks such as I. dammini and I. pacificus, it is crucial to acknowledge that this particular image focuses on Ixodes ricinus found in Europe. With darkfield illumination enhancing its features, this magnified view at 40 times its original size (6x7cm) offers valuable insights into these invertebrates' biology. Nature enthusiasts and zoology aficionados will be captivated by this stunning portrayal of an ixodes sp. , commonly known as sheep tick or lyme disease tick. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding these vectors' role in transmitting harmful diseases while appreciating their unique beauty within our natural world.
