Joseph Priestley, caricature C015 / 6707

Joseph Priestley (1733-1804). Caricature of the British chemist and clergyman Joseph Priestley. Priestly is best known as the discoverer of oxygen. He carried out research into the composition and nature of air, and was the first to suggest a connection between blood and air, although he did so using phlogiston theory. He was also the first person to recognise that respiration in animals produces carbon dioxide, whereas in plants it produces oxygen. His work on carbon dioxide led to soda water and other carbonated drinks

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white caricature print depicts the renowned British chemist and clergyman, Joseph Priestley. Known for his groundbreaking discovery of oxygen, Priestley's contributions to science are immortalized in this comical illustration. With a white background highlighting his portrait, this historic artwork captures the essence of the 18th and 19th centuries. Priestley's significant research on air composition led him to propose a connection between blood and air using phlogiston theory. He was also the first to recognize that respiration in animals produces carbon dioxide while plants produce oxygen. His work on carbon dioxide even paved the way for popular carbonated drinks like soda water. In this sketch, we see an adult Caucasian man with a comical expression, emphasizing both his scientific expertise as well as his witty personality. The artist has skillfully captured Priestley's likeness, showcasing his role as a chemist and scientist alongside his position as a clergyman. As one delves into history of science, Joseph Priestley stands out as an influential figure whose discoveries continue to impact our lives today. This monochrome artwork serves not only as a visual representation of Priestly but also pays homage to his immense contributions in physical chemistry.
