Illustration of thermoscope

Illustration depicting Robert Fludds thermoscope (centre), an early air thermometer, drawn in the centre of a globe representing the universe. Fludd (1574-1637) was a religious mystic who sought to bring together the macrocosm of the universe with the microcosm, man. He believed that circling of the Sun around the Earth caused the circulation of air & blood in the body. A universal expansion & contraction affected both macrocosm & microcosm, & was visible in the thermoscope. The thermoscope consists of an air-filled bulb (top) connected to a reservoir of water (bottom) by a graduated tube. The air in the bulb expands & contracts with temp- erature, causing the water level to rise & fall

Early History Of Science Robert Thermometer Fludd

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an intricate illustration of Robert Fludd's thermoscope, a groundbreaking early air thermometer. At the heart of this image lies a globe representing the vast universe, with Fludd's thermoscope taking center stage. Fludd, a religious mystic and visionary thinker from the 16th century, aimed to bridge the gap between the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of man. Fludd firmly believed that celestial movements influenced not only heavenly bodies but also human physiology. According to his theories, it was the Sun's orbit around Earth that caused both air and blood circulation within our bodies. The universal expansion and contraction he envisioned affected both macrocosm and microcosm alike – a concept beautifully visualized through his thermoscope. The thermoscope itself consists of an air-filled bulb positioned at its top, connected via a graduated tube to a water reservoir at its bottom. As temperature fluctuates, causing air inside the bulb to expand or contract, these changes are mirrored in water levels rising or falling accordingly. This historical artifact represents more than just scientific progress; it embodies Fludd's quest for unity between humanity and nature on both grand and minuscule scales. It serves as a testament to how early pioneers like him laid foundations for our understanding of physics and paved the way for future advancements in technology such as modern-day thermometers.
