Illustration of the first stage of Meiosis

Illustration of the first stage of meiosis (gametogenesis), a two-stage cell division process exclusive to production of male and female gametes in sexual reproduction. Gametes of both sexes contain only half (haploid) the full (diploid) complement of chromosomes. The first stage results in 2 haploid daughter cells (bottom right) with differing genetic constitutions to the mother cell (top left). Information exchange between homologous pairs of chromosomes (ribbons) is followed by separation of single chromosomes comprising each homologous pair to opposite ends of the spindle (the cells dividing apparatus)

Cell Division First Stage Meiosis

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of Meiosis, specifically focusing on its first stage. Meiosis is a vital cell division process that exclusively occurs during the production of male and female gametes in sexual reproduction. In this visually stunning illustration, we witness the mesmerizing transformation taking place within our own bodies. The image depicts two distinct stages: the mother cell situated at the top left corner and two haploid daughter cells positioned at the bottom right corner. These daughter cells possess only half (haploid) of the complete (diploid) set of chromosomes found in their parent cell. The genetic constitutions of these offspring differ from that of their mother cell, highlighting nature's ability to create unique combinations. The exchange of information between homologous pairs of chromosomes is represented by elegant ribbons connecting them. This exchange sets the foundation for genetic diversity as it precedes the separation of single chromosomes comprising each homologous pair towards opposite ends of a spindle-like structure known as a spindle apparatus. Through this awe-inspiring visual representation, Science Photo Library has beautifully captured one aspect crucial to human life – meiosis. It serves as a reminder that every individual begins their journey with an extraordinary blend inherited from both parents, ensuring variation and evolution in future generations.
