Honey bee on a Michaelmas daisy

Pollination. Macrophotograph of a honey bee, Apis mellifera, visiting a flowering Michaelmas daisy, Aster frikartii. Insects such as bees feed on the sugary fluid (nectar) and pollen found in flowers. The bee is attracted to flowers by their bright colours. By reaching inside the flower to gather the nectar with its tube-like proboscis, the bee has become dusted with pollen (yellow). The bee may also brush pollen from another flower onto this flowers reproductive organs causing cross- pollination. Michaelmas daisies are perennial plants with mauve flowers. Magnification: x2.7 at 6x4.5cm size. x1.8 at 35mm

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate relationship between a honey bee and a Michaelmas daisy. The macrophotograph showcases the beauty of nature's pollination process, as the bee delicately lands on the vibrant mauve flower. Insects like bees are drawn to flowers by their vivid colors, seeking out the sugary nectar and pollen they offer. As the bee reaches inside the flower with its tube-like proboscis to collect nectar, it unintentionally becomes dusted with yellow pollen. This accidental transfer of pollen is crucial for cross-pollination, allowing these magnificent plants to reproduce and thrive. The image beautifully illustrates how this particular honey bee may unknowingly brush pollen from another flower onto this one's reproductive organs. Michaelmas daisies, perennial plants known for their stunning mauve blooms, serve as both a source of nourishment for bees and an essential component in sustaining plant life through pollination. With magnification revealing intricate details at 2.7 times its original size in a 6x4.5cm format or 1.8 times at 35mm scale, this photograph truly highlights the wonders that lie within our natural world. This remarkable snapshot from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of nature's delicate balance and showcases the incredible symbiotic relationship between insects and flowers that keeps our ecosystems thriving.
