1731 Johann Scheuchzer Creation 6th day
1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer (1672-1733) folio copper engraving drawn by a team of engravers under the direction of Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1674-1748). The sixth day " Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds". Here this includes mammals and reptiles. The goal of Scheuchzers work was to use the best contemporary science to illuminate the biblical account of human history in a sequence of 745 plates. At the time there was little doubt that science (physica) supported the literal truth of the Biblical chronology of creation and history

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and thought-provoking artwork of Johann Scheuchzer's "Physica Sacra" from 1731. The image depicts the sixth day of creation, as described in the Bible, where God commands the earth to bring forth living creatures according to their kinds. In this remarkable engraving, created under the guidance of Johann Andreas Pfeffel, we witness a diverse array of mammals and reptiles emerging from the depths of nature. Scheuchzer's ambitious project aimed to harmonize contemporary scientific knowledge with biblical teachings through a series of 745 plates. During that era, there was little doubt among scholars that science (physica) supported the literal truth behind the biblical chronology of creation and history. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to this artwork, transporting us back to an era when art served not only as a medium for expression but also as a tool for understanding our place in both religious and natural realms. This piece invites contemplation on themes such as species diversity, speciation processes, and even science-religion relationships. Paul D. Stewart's skillful capture allows us to appreciate every delicate detail within this historical masterpiece while reminding us that art can be an invaluable bridge between different fields of human knowledge – in this case, theology and science – offering new perspectives on age-old questions about our origins.
