Grass snake feigning death

Grass snake (Natrix natrix) feigning death. This non-venomous snake lives in meadows, marshes and on the edge of rivers, streams and canals. It feeds on frogs, toads and newts. It has a forked tongue (black), which it uses as a sense organ to smell the presence of prey. When disturbed, grass snakes often feign death by remaining still, usually with their mouths open as seen. N. natrix usually measures between 0.6 and 2 metres in length. This snake is found throughout Europe, in western Asia and in north-western Africa

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the incredible moment of a Grass snake (Natrix natrix) feigning death. Known for its non-venomous nature, this snake thrives in meadows, marshes, and along the banks of rivers, streams, and canals. Its diet mainly consists of frogs, toads, and newts. The distinguishing feature of this species is its forked tongue which it employs as a sensory organ to detect prey. When faced with disturbance or danger, grass snakes have an intriguing defense mechanism - they pretend to be dead by remaining motionless. This behavior is often accompanied by their mouths being held open as seen in the photograph. Measuring between 0.6 and 2 meters in length on average, N. natrix can be found across Europe, western Asia, and north-western Africa. The image showcases the coiled body of this Eurasian reptile with its head positioned prominently at the center. The striking black forked tongue adds an element of intrigue while highlighting its exceptional sense of smell used for hunting purposes. Andy Harmer's skillful photography beautifully captures not only the physical attributes but also sheds light on the fascinating behavioral traits exhibited by these grass snakes in their natural habitat.
