False-colour SEM of gastric glands of stomach

Gastric gland: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucous membrane lining the stomach, showing the shadowy entrances to a number of gastric glands. The glands secrete gastric juice (hydrochloric acid & the enzyme pepsin) and a protective mucous, derived from the simple, columnar cells (moss-like) that comprise the mucosa. Gastric glands are formed by simple invagination or tubular ingrowth of this mucosa into the underlying layer of tissue, the lamina propria. Magnification: x300 at 6x7cm size

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate beauty of the gastric glands found in the lining of our stomachs. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are presented with a mesmerizing view of the mucous membrane, revealing the mysterious entrances to numerous gastric glands. These remarkable glands play a vital role in our digestive system by secreting gastric juice, which consists of hydrochloric acid and pepsin, an enzyme crucial for breaking down proteins. Additionally, they produce a protective mucous derived from simple columnar cells that make up the mucosa. The formation of these gastric glands occurs through a process known as invagination or tubular ingrowth, where the mucosa extends into the underlying tissue layer called lamina propria. This unique arrangement allows for efficient secretion and absorption within our stomachs. At a magnification level of x300 on a 6x7cm size scale, this microscopic image provides us with an extraordinary glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy - specifically focusing on digestion and gut health. The false colouring enhances visual clarity while maintaining scientific accuracy. This stunning photograph is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection showcasing various subjects related to anatomy and physiology. It serves as both an educational tool and an artistic representation that highlights the complexity and wonderment hidden within our own bodies.
