Coloured SEM of crystals of glycine

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of crystals of glycine, the simplest of the amino acids. Glycine consists of a central carbon atom, to which are attached two hydrogen atoms, one amino group and one carboxyl group. It is a neurotransmitter and important in metabolism because it contributes carbon atoms in the formation of the blood pigments. Glycine is also used in the synthesis of adenine and guanine, two of the nucleic acids, and is incorporated into protein directly. It is likely to have been the first amino acid formed on Earth at the time of the primeval soup. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size, x120 at 6x6cm size. Blue & orange colouring. BW original is A610/138

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of crystals of glycine, the simplest amino acid. The intricate image reveals the structural beauty of these crystals, which play crucial roles in various biological processes. Glycine consists of a central carbon atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms, an amino group, and a carboxyl group. Beyond its structural significance, glycine serves as a neurotransmitter and contributes carbon atoms in the formation of blood pigments. It also plays essential roles in metabolism by aiding in the synthesis of adenine and guanine, two nucleic acids vital for genetic information storage. Furthermore, glycine directly incorporates into proteins. Interestingly, scientists believe that glycine might have been the first amino acid formed on Earth during the primeval soup era. Its presence in this early stage suggests its fundamental role in life's origins. The magnified view at 80 times for 35mm size or 120 times for 6x6cm size allows us to appreciate every detail within these mesmerizing blue and orange-colored crystals. This black-and-white original photograph with reference A610/138 is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection dedicated to showcasing scientific wonders from various fields such as crystallography, chemistry, biochemistry, and more.
