Sigmund Freud, caricature
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). Caricature of the Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud. Freud theorized that mental illness could have psychological as well as physiological causes. He believed that the mind contains conscious and unconscious levels. Bad memories are repressed and stored unconsciously, but may still affect behaviour. Freud studied the unconscious by analysing subjects dreams. These studies led him to believe that sexual impulses were responsible for neuroses. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a caricature of the renowned Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud. Known for his groundbreaking theories on the human mind, Freud believed that mental illness could stem from both psychological and physiological causes. He delved into the depths of consciousness and unconsciousness, asserting that repressed memories have the power to influence our behavior without us even realizing it. Freud's extensive studies on dreams allowed him to explore the enigmatic realm of the unconscious. Through this exploration, he controversially concluded that sexual impulses played a significant role in causing neuroses. Despite being a subject of ongoing debate, Freud is widely regarded as one of modern history's most creative thinkers. In this illustration against a pristine white background, we see an older European male with a distinguished white beard and cigar in hand – symbols synonymous with Freud himself. The artist masterfully captures not only his physical appearance but also hints at his influential work in psychology and psychiatry. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking image by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of Freud's lasting impact on our understanding of human behavior and psyche. It serves as an homage to one man who dared to challenge conventional wisdom and forever changed how we perceive ourselves.
