Johannes Kepler, caricature

Johannes Kepler. Caricature of the German astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), holding a model of a cube to represent his theories of the planetary orbits. Kepler first worked out the laws of planetary motion, which still bear his name. Using Copernicus heliocentric model of the solar system, along with Tycho Brahes data on the position of the planets, he found that planets orbit the Sun on elliptical paths with the Sun at one focus, that the area swept out by a planet is the same regardless of where it is in its orbit, and that a planets orbital period is proportional to the long axis of its orbit to the power of 3/2. He thought the planetary distances were based on the sizes of nested Platonic solids, which include this cube

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a caricature of the renowned German astronomer, Johannes Kepler. In this artistic portrayal, Kepler is depicted holding a model of a cube, symbolizing his groundbreaking theories on planetary orbits. Known as the father of modern astronomy, Kepler revolutionized our understanding of celestial motion by formulating the laws that bear his name. Drawing inspiration from Copernicus' heliocentric model and utilizing Tycho Brahe's meticulous planetary data, Kepler discovered that planets follow elliptical paths around the Sun with one focus at its center. Moreover, he revealed that regardless of their position in orbit, planets sweep out equal areas over equal time intervals. Additionally, he unveiled the relationship between a planet's orbital period and the long axis of its orbit to the power of 3/2. Kepler also delved into an intriguing hypothesis regarding planetary distances based on nested Platonic solids – including this very cube held in his hand. This illustration beautifully captures both his scientific achievements and imaginative musings. As we gaze upon this monochrome artwork capturing a pivotal figure in history, we are reminded not only of Kepler's immense contributions to astronomy but also his enduring legacy as one who dared to challenge conventional wisdom and unlock the secrets hidden within our vast universe.
