Cramp of the foot, satirical artwork

Cramp of the foot. Satirical artwork showing a man suffering an attack of cramp in his right foot, the toes of which have contracted in a painful spasm. The 2-volume medical encyclopedia on the table at right is labelled Buchans Family Medicine, a reference to the famous work Domestic Medicine (1769) by the Scottish physician William Buchan (1729-1805). This artwork, dating from 1828, was published in London. This version is from the German book Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This satirical artwork, dating back to 1828 and published in London, captures the painful condition of a man suffering from a cramp in his right foot. The illustration depicts the toes of his foot contracted in a spasm, causing him great discomfort. In the background, we see a two-volume medical encyclopedia titled "Buchans Family Medicine" referencing William Buchan's renowned work on Domestic Medicine from 1769. The artist behind this piece is Eugen Hollander, a German art historian and physician who compiled it for his book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921. This particular version of the artwork comes from that publication. The image provides us with an intriguing glimpse into both historical medicine practices and artistic expression during the 19th century. It showcases how conditions like cramps were caricaturized at that time as part of satirical commentary on society. Through this monochrome illustration, we witness the wincing reaction of an upper-class Caucasian male experiencing muscle contraction within his foot. The setting appears to be an elegant European lounge or home environment. Overall, this artwork serves as a testament to the history of medicine and art history alike while shedding light on societal perceptions surrounding health issues centuries ago.
